Tier 1: tools inside each casino

Every licensed casino must offer these. If a site doesn't, that's a red flag — see our scam guide.

Tier 2: national self-exclusion

BetStop (online betting/casino)

BetStop is the Australian National Self-Exclusion Register. Registering blocks you from every Australian-licensed online wagering service (sportsbet, tabcorp, ladbrokes, etc) for 3 months to lifetime. It doesn't cover offshore casinos, but most offshore operators honour BetStop if you provide proof.

BetStop does not block offshore casinos

This is the hard truth. If you're BetStop-registered and then deposit at an offshore casino, the bet will still go through. The only defence is:

  1. Enable your bank's gambling block (see Tier 3 below)
  2. Use GamBlock software on every device
  3. Self-exclude directly with each offshore site you've signed up with

Tier 3: bank-level gambling blocks

BankHow to enableTurn-off cool-off

NABApp → Cards → Card controls → Gambling block48 hours

ANZApp → Cards → Card management → Block gambling48 hours
MacquarieApp → Settings → Card controls → Block gambling24 hours

The cool-off window is critical. When you try to remove the block, the bank waits X hours before actually lifting it. That's designed to give you time to change your mind.

Tier 4: software blocks

Tier 5: human support

Practical advice: before you deposit

  1. Set a deposit limit equal to what you're OK losing entirely. Never deposit more than you'd spend on dinner for mates.
  2. Set a session time limit — 45 mins is plenty for an entertainment session.
  3. Never gamble while drinking or stressed. Decisions you wouldn't make sober aren't decisions, they're mistakes.
  4. Track your wins/losses. Most Aussies underestimate losses by 50%+. Reality is sobering.
  5. If you catch yourself "chasing losses" — stop. The hole only gets deeper.

The 18+ reminder

Online gambling in Australia is for adults only. If someone under 18 has access to your account, that's a breach of T&Cs and may void winnings. Enable the session-lock features.
